Modern Leadership: From Control to Trust

What 30 participants discovered through LEGO® Serious Play®

What does modern leadership really look like?
Together with The Modern Leader Community, we explored this question with 30 participants through a LEGO® Serious Play® workshop.
Instead of starting with a predefined leadership model, participants built and shared their own perspectives — making abstract ideas visible and creating a collective picture of modern leadership.

From control to trust

One of the strongest themes was the shift away from leadership based on control, micromanagement and rigid processes.
In their place, participants highlighted:
trust, shared responsibility, autonomy, curiosity and psychological safety.
But modern leadership does not mean letting go of direction or accountability.
It means creating the conditions for people to take ownership while remaining connected to a common purpose.

What leaders already have

The group identified a strong foundation:
professional expertise, emotional intelligence, empathy, creativity, purpose and the ability to work with others.
The challenge is not always to develop completely new capabilities.
Sometimes it is about having the confidence and courage to use the capabilities we already have differently - to delegate more, trust others and create space for contribution.

Psychological safety + productivity

Perhaps the most important insight was the connection between psychological safety and performance.
A safe environment is not one without expectations.
It is one where people can ask questions, admit mistakes, say “I don't know”, experiment and learn — while still being accountable for meaningful results.
The goal is not psychological safety instead of productivity.
It is:

High psychological safety + high productivity.

The modern leader

The collective picture that emerged was of a leader who:
gives direction without controlling every step;
creates trust rather than dependence;
shares responsibility;
listens before assuming;
creates space for people to contribute;
and connects freedom with a shared purpose.
As one of the workshop images captured it, modern leadership gives people “wings, lightness and freedom.”

Why LEGO® Serious Play®?

The value of LEGO® Serious Play® is not in the bricks themselves.
It is in giving people a structured way to make thinking visible, hear different perspectives and build understanding together.
For complex topics such as leadership, culture and organisational change, this can turn an abstract conversation into something people can see, question and shape together.

The takeaway

Modern leadership is not about replacing everything that came before.
Direction, accountability and results still matter.
What changes is how we create them:
with more trust, more ownership and more space for people to lead together.
